Humane Canada Celebrates 60 Years

This year, Humane Canada celebrates its 60th anniversary – a milestone that we are very proud to reach!

Since 1957, we have worked diligently to earn our solid reputation as the national voice for animal welfare in Canada and have achieved major accomplishments for animals – in the home, on the farm, in the wild and in research.

Our first major win for animals came in 1960 when we successfully advocated for the passage of the Humane Slaughter Act – the first and only humane slaughter legislation in Canada. Since then, we have co-founded multiple national animal welfare councils and coalitions, including the National Companion Animal Coalition (NCAC) and the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC). Humane Canada has harmonized microchipping systems across the country to ensure that a pet lost anywhere in Canada can make it home, introduced important regulations preventing the import of puppy mill dogs from the United States, pushed for the revision of outdated animal cruelty provisions in the Criminal Code of Canada, and released the first-ever Sector Report to provide a comprehensive view of the state of the animal welfare sector in Canada.

Humane Canada has also successfully advocated for the passage of new federal legislation, including Canada’s first transport regulations for animals, the 2007 updates to the Criminal Code of Canada and Quanto’s Law, which created added protections for Canada’s military, police and service animals. Most recently, Humane Canada established the National Centre for the Prosecution of Animal Cruelty to ensure that the best possible tools and information are in the hands of Crown prosecutors working on animal cruelty cases across the country to ensure abusers are charged properly and receive proportional sentencing under the law.

With this long and rich history of important contributions to animal welfare, it is imperative that we drive forward the legacy of our movement. In this special anniversary year, we’ve already taken the opportunity to strike out in bold new directions and launched several new campaigns and projects to secure progress for Canada’s animals. But we need your support to continue this vital work.

That’s why we’re launching a special anniversary celebration, an opportunity for our supporters and followers to put their mark on the map in Canada and join a nation of animal lovers who, just like them, believe that 2017 is the year we make real change for Canada’s animals.

Stay tuned for the launch of this special anniversary celebration, on our 60th anniversary, August 7th 2017!
