Ottawa – January 16, 2017 - For the first time ever, the CFHS National Animal Welfare Conference is happening in the nation’s capital. We’ll be celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday, the 60th anniversary of the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, and the progress we’ve made as a sector since Confederation.
“This is a very special year for our organization and for our community,” says Barbara Cartwright, CEO of the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies. “Humane societies and SPCAs have been around nearly as long as Canada itself, and we have a lot of achievements to celebrate. This conference will also help us to collectively set our minds to the work that needs to be done for Canada’s animals over the next year – to set priorities, build community and learn from each other.”
The National Animal Welfare Conference is a world-class event that boasts more than 35 individual sessions led by innovative and relevant speakers – including three can’t-miss plenary discussions on the connections between human vulnerability and animal vulnerability; learning from the Fort McMurray fires; and bridging animal welfare and animal rights.
The conference features the following 7 learning tracks, and all sessions are open to the media:
• Cats in Canada
• Sheltering for Change
• Farm Animal Welfare
• One Welfare
• Animal Law & Enforcement
• Wildlife Welfare
• Advocacy & Building Humane Communities

This year, we’ll also be holding a special anniversary awards gala to celebrate the best in animal welfare in Canada and recognize the leaders in our community who are pushing forward important innovations to change the lives of animals for the better.
“Our hard-working community is bringing essential care, support and innovation to Canadian animal welfare practices each and every day,” says Cartwright. “We want to take time out to recognize the thought leaders and innovators that have been nominated by our sector for their exceptional work for animals.”
The 60th Anniversary Awards Gala is Sunday, April 9 in the Shaw Centre’s Trillium Ballroom. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for media passes to the event.

About the CFHS National Animal Welfare Conference
The CFHS National Animal Welfare Conference is an annual forum that advances cohesion, professionalism, knowledge and effectiveness within the animal welfare movement in Canada—thus advancing the welfare of companion animals, farm animals, animals in research, wild animals and the laws governing animals in Canada. The 2017 conference will be the largest event yet, offering an opportunity to share, learn, connect and network with the animal welfare community in Canada. This will be the fourth annual NAWC event.
